Notes:
Scamp is available to an adult only, dog experienced home.
Scamp and his sister were products of a backyard breeder who
obviously was not concerned about the dogs in his care. During
the most important weeks of Scamp's life, he likely lived in a
small pen away from any human contact or stimulation.
May 13/04 A note from his foster home since seperating Scamp
from his sister: Scamper is doing great. When I came home from
dropping off Goldie I let Scamper out of the pen. He looked around
the house and yard and then started to play with Shandy. I took
away the xpen and left the kennel for sleeping. That night he
slept fine. Woke up the next morning and starting the kennel training
for his business outside. He has had one accident. .
When I approach him he runs away until I tell him to settle.
Once he has settled I pick him up and hold him then release him
to go and play with the dogs.
Scamper shows no signs of fear around people. Yesterday I took
him to the beach with my dogs. I had him on a long lead. He was
very funny. He touched the sand and smelled the rocks. He barked
at all the other dogs. He played in the water and ran up and down
the beach. People came up to him and put their hand out to him.
He smelled their hands and that was it. My concern with him is
that his confidence is pretty low around strange dogs. He barks
and barks at them. He did find another terrier to play with at
the beach but mostly he followed Shandy and played with her. It
was a big day for Scamper. Scamper ran around outside with the
kids. He did not bark once at them or show any sign of fear. He
simply went on with his play and business outside.
When I hold Scamper he still tightens his little body up. It
takes time for him to relax on my lap. He doesn't snuggle. He
just lays on my lap. I pet him and talk softly to him. Then I
put him down or in his kennel. He will come when called only if
Shandy comes first or when it's time to come inside or when it
is feeding time. This is coming along but needs more work.
May 1/04 A note from his foster home: Scamper shows no signs
of fear when I reach in to pick him up. He will go to the corner
of the pen and wait for me to get him. Scamper is just now looking
me in the eye although it is very brief. He will let other people
hold him such as my husband and people at my son's school. He
found his bark the other day. He barks when he wants to play with
the dogs or when he is angry at Goldie. Scamper mostly plays with
Goldie when he is in the yard. He loves to play ball. He is good
at fetching and bringing it back. He comes about half way to me
when I call him. Lots of praise for both dogs when they come close
to me. I encourage Scamper to come with food. He loves hotdogs.
Scamper is more ready to accept people than he is to walk on the
leash or try new things with me. He will not move once I try and
walk him with the leash. He shows fear when I put him down outside
of my yard.
Scamper has a great smile when he is playing. He loves to relax
and watch my family in the living room. He does not bark at strangers
or cower when approached - he goes to the corner and waits. Scamper
is a wonderful dog. He is fun and cares very much for Goldie.
She has him wrapped around her finger. He howls for her when I
take her out without him. This behavior is becoming less over
time. Scamper is very dependent on Goldie. He does not go up to
my dogs to play without Golde around. I will be seperating the
pups more often to establish confidence in him.
Scamper is very handsome and fun. He has lots of expressions
on his face. He growls at Goldie and whines at her when he wants
something from her. When I leave the house he howls and when I
come home he whines.
Scamper is coming along very nicely. Scamper is going to take
work with training him to be able to be out in the world. He would
benefit from someone who will take the time to encourage him to
feel safe on his own.
