Reiki is an ancient healing art, with roots in Tibetan practices
dating back thousands of years. The word Reiki is derived from the
words Rei meaning universal and Ki meaning energy. Reiki means universal
life energy. By placing their hands on, or over the recipient, a
Reiki practitioner acts as a channel, transmitting this energy to
the recipient. While often used on humans, animals too have a great
affinity for Reiki.
Is
Reiki safe for my pet?
Reiki is very gentle, involving the laying on of hands at specific
energy centres on the body. Because the recipient's body does not
have to be moved or manipulated, Reiki can be used even on very
fragile animals such as the elderly, very young or those with health
concerns. In the case of burns or dressings, for example, the hands
may be placed slightly above the body, achieving an excellent result.
Reiki is perfectly safe and does not conflict in any way with other
treatments, and so is an ideal complementary treatment.
What benefit
can I expect from Reiki?
Reiki has the ability to calm, ease discomfort and aid the body's
own ability to heal itself.
The pet's family, if present during the session, often
experience these benefits themselves!
Reiki is also a wonderful gift for well animals to help maintain
well-being.
What happens during a Reiki session?
A typical session lasts between 30 to 45 minutes and begins with
asking questions about your pet to understand their needs. By moving
over your pet's body with a sequence of hand placements, the energy
will be transmitted to your pet. The session is individualized to
respond to each pet's particular needs. While benefit will be enjoyed
from one session, some situations require subsequent sessions to
promote healing.
