SurreyGerlz was started in February
2006 by Amanda Bonella and Trina Ricketts in anticipation of and as a
personal tribute to International Women's Month (March).
Both women
had been working for sex worker rights and issues primarily in the
Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, but as residents of Surrey, felt they
needed to reach out to their sisters in their own community.
Dawn Royle, also a Surrey girl, joined the outreach team in the
same month it was started. When she found out about it, she
enthusiastically offered to be involved.
Surrey Gerlz was
born!
In the next four months, Surrey Gerlz made connections
with many Surrey service organizations including the Front Room and
S.A.S. They participated in meetings with RCMP and Surrey Memorial
Hospital's Chemical Dependency team.
Everything fell into place so
easily and everyone was so supportive that Surrey Gerlz seemed destined
to happen.
